OUR PROJECTS

Seven projects in Western Australia

Property and Plantations

Outback Carbon have identified, analysed, and successfully executed seven projects in the Mid-West and Wheatbelt region of WA.

Plantation carbon projects of ~3,000ha were successfully established during the 2022 and 2023 planting seasons, ~8,000ha in 2024 and ~9000ha in 2025. Outback Carbon has committed to establishing another 10,000ha in 2026.

Our plantation model combines plantation and agriculture use of land, with the intent of not locking up the land with wall-to-wall trees. Plantation land is able to be leased for traditional agriculture to neighbouring farmers.

Trees offer valuable shade and shelter for livestock. Their deep perennial roots help improve soil and water salinity, while also reducing erosion. As a long-term crop, trees support succession planning and can be harvested and sold when the time suits.

Selecting the right tree species for the right location at an optimal planting density that supports long-term growth and resilience is essential. By accounting for climate and local environmental factors and minimizing competition, trees are better able to thrive in drier conditions. These projects not only aim to produce valuable wood products in the future, but also create opportunities for establishing perennial and legume-based pastures, supporting future grazing or inter-row cropping. Additionally, neighbouring farmers may have the option to lease the land, enhancing and diversifying their existing agricultural operations.

BALLAMORE

The Ballamore plantation is located at the northern point of the Mid West’s agriculture region in the Shire of Northampton, bordering on the Coolcalalaya Reserve.

Ballamore is made up of sectioned agricultural land with typically sandy soil that has some loamy areas; the property averages 350mm rainfall each year.

The closest town, Yuna, is ~30 minutes away, and Geraldton City is ~1.5 hours to the southwest. Geraldton and Dongara contractors are utilised for plumbing, electrical, fencing, spraying, fire break and other services required at Ballamore; and neighbours also provide some services.

BANKINA

Outback Carbon acquired Bankina in 2022. As part of its forward-thinking land management strategy, Outback Carbon sold premium agricultural parcels from the Bankina plantation project—areas known for their fertile soils and strong cropping potential. By identifying and releasing high-quality land for cropping and grazing, Outback Carbon not only maximizes land use productivity of these parcels, but also enabling local farmers with the opportunity to expand and enhance their operations.

BAR-4

The Bar-4 plantation is Outback Carbon’s first plantation project, acquired in 2022.

Located in the Wheatbelt Shire of Dandaragan, Bar-4 is 1,100 hectares of predominantly sand plain and gravel.

Located ~30km from Moora, local contractors and service providers are utilised for weed and pest management, speed tilling, infrastructure maintenance and other services.

Being the oldest of Outback Carbon projects, and having the most advanced trees, Outback Carbon utilised sheep to graze the property. Not only did this help manage weeds but also provided neighbouring land holders land for grazing purpose.

CASOTTI

Located in the Shire of Coorow, the Casotti plantation is a 1,600 hectare project.

Casotti is made up of deep sand plain and gravel seams; and has a clean and simple plantation design, which will help enable development of perennials species for future grazing opportunities.

Casotti is located ~28km from the town of Coorow and local contractors and service providers from the region are utilised for weed and pest management and fencing.

Devon

The Devon plantation was acquired in 2023, a 5,527 hectare property located in the Shire of Chapman Valley.

Post-acquisition, Outback Carbon sold-off three blocks from the Devon property as the Outback Carbon strategy is to section off land with good cropping and/or grazing soil areas and, where feasible, encourage neighbours to acquire this land.

The retained property is mainly sandy soils and it receives an average of 350mm rainfall each year; and the Chapman River runs along the eastern boundary and through the southern area of the property.

Devon is located ~25km from Yuna and ~150km northeast of Geraldton. Geraldton and Dongara contractors are utilised for plumbing, electrical, fencing, spraying, fire break and other services required at the property.

Irwin Park

The Irwin Park plantation is located on 340 hectares within the Shire of Irwin. The property is owned by MEPAU Perth Basin, and the farm is a shared management property.

The Irwin Park plantation is growing on sandy loam soils and is buffeted by the coastal winds typical of the region.  It receives an average yearly rainfall of 408mm.

Geraldton and Dongara contractors are utilised for spraying, tilling, maintenance, fencing and other services as required. Once the trees are robust enough, we hope to use local grazing stock to manage weeds.

Southern Cross Yilgarn

Located in the Shire of Yilgarn, the Southern Cross Yilgarn (SXY) plantation is a ~16,000 hectare, located near Southern Cross.

The SXY plantation is located in a semi-arid region that receives ~340mm annual rainfall. The soil is predominantly clay loams. Lake Baladjie is located directly north of the most northern part of the plantation, with Baladjie Rock, a popular camping spot, is located to the west.

Neighbours and local service providers have been engaged for vermin control, earth works, supply of water tanks and chemical, chemical spraying and fencing.

SXY is Outback Carbon’s first carbon project in the eastern Wheatbelt.
