Outback Carbon hosted a tree planting event near Southern Cross in the Shire of Yilgarn to celebrate a key milestone in their collaborative carbon farming initiative.
This large-scale project, launched in 2024, represents a major step forward in sustainable land use in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt. It is dedicated to developing integrated carbon farming and agricultural projects across the region.
The event marked the commencement of seedling planting across the region, with approximately 1.8 million native trees to be planted across 8,000 to 10,000 hectares throughout 2025.
The planting project aims to achieve 20% canopy cover by the time the timber is harvested, which facilitates the retention of 70 – 80% of the land for agriculture as pasture for livestock or cropping and potential soil sequestration when the method allows for it to be eligible.
The project focuses on two key native eucalyptus species: Eucalyptus salubris (Gimlet) and Eucalyptus salmonophloia (Salmon Gum), both well adapted to the Wheatbelt environment. These species play a vital role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity restoration, and long-term ecological regeneration.
The tree planting event was attended by representatives from the Shire of Yilgarn and were welcomed by the Outback Carbon team, who led the day’s activities and shared insights into the vision and impact of the project.
